Dog Dies From Cage Dryer
Fair Oaks, California - A California woman is suing PETCO after her dog suffered fatal injuries from being placed in a cage dryer. Teresa Gilland dropped her dog Sadie off for her monthly grooming appointment at the PETCO store in Fair Oaks - where Sadie experienced heat stroke, internal bleeding and burns after being in a cage dryer at the store. She had to be euthanized at the veterinary office later that evening because of her extreme injuries. Gilliand hopes she can get cage driers banned, but said consumers should at least see a posted warning when they drop off their pet. More
Rioting youths attack police on Hollywood Boulevard
California - Three people were taken into custody after police moved in on an unruly crowd on Hollywood Boulevard that had gathered for a film premiere and after-party. The violence began after people were turned away from the invitation-only party, which was to begin after the premiere of the “Electric Daisy Experience” film at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Authorities said people threw rocks and bottles and three police vehicles were damaged, but no injuries were reported. The crowds set fires and were fired on by riot police shooting bean bags. Hotel chain introduces snore patrols
UK - Crowne Plaza is trialing the first snore absorption rooms at 10 hotels in Europe and the Middle East, whilst six branches in Britain have implemented snore patrols this month in a bid to combat noisy sleepers. Snore monitors patrol corridors in the designated quiet zones of Crowne Plaza hotels in the cities of London, Leeds and Manchester. Their job is to listen out for offensive noises and knock on the door of guests who snore too loudly. “We have quiet zones on two floors of the hotel. As Snore Monitor, I conduct floor walks to check for noise disruptions, paying particular attention to the quiet zone rooms,” said Laura Simpson, Snore Monitor at Leeds Crowne Plaza hotel in northern England. Drunk Dad lets little girl drive and crashes SUV into a church fence
Brandon, Florida - A man with a suspended license, who had been drinking, let an 11-year-old girl drive a SUV that crashed into a church fence in Brandon. The SUV demolished a fenced-in water pipe, sending a 50-foot geyser into the air and knocking out water to the First Baptist Church of Brandon. Deputies say Donald Leet told them he was teaching the 11-year-old how to drive. A seven-year-old girl was also in the SUV. Deputies say all three suffered minor injuries. Damage to the SUV, fence and water pipe topped $10,000, according to deputies. “He was drinking,” said police. “But we couldn’t charge him with DUI. The little girl was driving.” More

Boy Scout Leader Jailed for Bullet in Fanny Pack
Liberty, Missouri - A Missouri man is home after spending four days in a jail in the Bahamas because airport security found a bullet in his fanny pack. Forty-eight-year-old Darrell Lapp returned to Liberty after a scuba diving trip with a Boy Scout troop. His ordeal began last when airport security in Freeport, Bahamas found a .32-caliber bullet inside his fanny pack. He was charged with possessing ammunition and sent to a jail in Nassau. Lapp says he thinks he left the bullet in his pack after a hunting trip. More

Man kills another over dripping air conditioner
Chicago - A dripping window air conditioner led to the execution-style killing of a West Side man, police said. Charles Sims, 28, shot Jimmy Parker eight times. Sims appeared in courton a charge of first-degree murder. He is being held without bond. Sims’ sister had complained to him that Parker dropped water on her from the window of an apartment building in the 5600 block of West Washington, police said. But the water was simply condensation falling from an air conditioner in a third-floor apartment where the 29-year-old Parker was visiting a woman. The warm water fell on Sims’ sister when she returned home to the building shortly before midnight. She called police to report the incident. She also told her brother, who returned to the building and confronted Parker outside. More

Bald eagle saved by vet’s mouth-to-beak CPR
Oregon - A Bend, Ore., veterinarian has performed life-saving CPR on an injured bald eagle that was under anesthesia during physical therapy. Dr. Jeff Cooney performed the therapy, during which the bald eagle nicknamed “Patriot” stopped breathing. Dr. Cooney’s “mouth to beak” resuscitation got the eagle breathing again. The injured eagle was found by two La Pine women near Crane Prairie Reservoir. The eagle had suffered, among other injuries, a dislocated shoulder and paralyzed right leg. More
Doll Teaches Little Girls How To Breast Feed
New York - A new doll hitting stores in the U.S. is causing some controversy with parents. It’s called The Breast Milk Baby and it claims it teaches young girls how to breast feed. The doll is made byBerjuan Toys, a company out of Spain. It comes with a special halter top that has two flowers where nipples would be. When a little girl puts on the top and holds the baby doll up the flowers, it makes suckling sounds. The company says the doll is a top-selling toy in Europe and on its website, says the toy ”lets young girls express their love and affection in the most natural way possible, just like mommy!” But the toy has many parents asking if it’s going too far. Woman Shooting at Dog Kills Husband
Mississippi - Police in Mississippi say a woman opened fire on a puppy that had threatened children, but wound up shooting and killing her husband. Witnesses tell police that the pit bull named “Cocaine” had lunged at some children and tried to attack them. The dead man’s son says the children were taken inside and his father picked the dog up. It was then that police say Betty Walker fired twice, hitting the dog once and her husband once in the chest. Jackson police spokeswoman Colendula Green says the death of 53-year-old Robert Walker appears to have been accidental. More

Lightning Kills Dad, Son 48 Years Later
New Jersey - A Hammonton, New Jersey man is dead after lightning struck so close to him that it sent a surge of electricity through his body. Before Stephen Rooney, 54, walked away from his wife, family and friends at a barbecue he was struck. He’d just said, after seeing lightning in the sky, “Don’t worry guys, lightning never strikes twice.” That line is much more than a cliché in the Rooney family. Stephen’s father also died after being struck by lightning 48 years ago while he was fishing in Fortescue, N.J. Stephen was just five years old. Rooney was with his cousin when a bolt of lightning hit the ground where they were standing. The men had stepped away from the barbecue — right by a tree — to smoke a cigar when they were hit. More

Two gored in Spanish bull run
Pamplona, Spain - Fighting bulls gored two young men as the half-ton beasts tore through the winding streets of Pamplona in Spain’s San Fermin festival, officials said. More than a thousand thrill-seekers ran alongside the six bulls and six steers bolting through the streets of the northern city, some daring to get as close as possible to their horns. Eight people were injured, including the two who suffered gorings, in the sixth of eight daily runs of the festival. One bull’s horn struck a 40-year-old man from Pamplona in his side and another skewered a 41-year-old daredevil in the right arm. A 21-year-old Australian suffered a broken nose while his 30-year-old compatriot dislocated an elbow. Others had head injuries, broken bones, bruises and cuts. More

Fireworks accident decapitates man
Fargo - Police identified the victim as Jesse William Burley, a 41-year-old father of two. Chris Hanson, Burley’s neighbor who saw the accident, was packing up his car to leave north Fargo’s Riviera Heights mobile home park. Burley was getting ready to set off a second round of what Hanson said he believed was either a homemade or illegal artillery shell firework. “He went over into the middle of the street, and within 10 seconds of us talking to him, he lit it and all we saw was a cloud of smoke, a bang,” Hanson said. What Hanson saw next immediately sent him into shock, he said. “When I walked up to his body, it was nothing but his shoulders down,” Hanson said. More
