New park offers X-rated views of NYC hotel guests

NEW YORK — Some guests at a New York City hotel near an elevated park have been offering unobstructed views of themselves.

Guests at the Standard Hotel in Manhattan keep failing to close the curtains as they frolic naked in front of their rooms' floor-to-ceiling windows, easily viewed from the High Line park below. The park recently opened atop an abandoned elevated rail line.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has called the hotel's window action "unacceptable."

Aaron Lipman works in the neighborhood and says the shows are "healthy and fun." He says they're like TV's "Wild Kingdom."

The hotel issued a statement Monday saying its managers will try to "remind guests of the transparency" of the windows.

The hotel won an award from the Municipal Arts Society of New York for best new building erected last year.

Unsuspecting woman continued to adopt new ones over four-month period

NEW YORK - A self-employed graphic designer methodically killed at least four of his girlfriend's cats and tortured two others while the unsuspecting woman continued to adopt new ones over a four-month period, authorities said Friday.

Sean Lynde was arrested Friday on charges including six counts of felony animal cruelty. He pleaded not guilty at state Supreme Court in Manhattan and was freed on $5,000 bond.

His lawyer, Elliot Kay, said Lynde is looking forward to a trial, not a plea deal.

It's a howl: NYC artist compiles album of screams

NEW YORK – This new album is a scream — and more.

"Favorite Recorded Scream" is a compilation of 74 brief howls, whoops, cries and other guttural exclamations from songs by the Who, the Pixies, Slayer, Bjork and dozens of others.

New York City artist LeRoy Stevens came up with the idea while listening to "A Change Is Going to Come" by the 1960s soul singer Baby Huey. The song climaxes in a series of screeches.

He later asked Manhattan record shop clerks to choose their favorite song scream and to tell him why.

With their suggestions, he pressed 500 copies of a 12-inch vinyl record.

The record is for sale for about $15 at Manhattan stores and online.

Artist's fake drug dealing riles NYC residents

NEW YORK – Brooklyn residents are riled over a performance artist who's been delivering bags of fake crack. The Daily News reported that Nate Hill makes the deliveries dressed in a white tuxedo and a dolphin headpiece. He shows up between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., like a real drug pusher.

Enrica Serrero said she ordered the "candy crack" at a Williamsburg party last Sunday. Says the 21-year-old: "I'd definitely do it again."

Hill calls it "amusing theater."

Ismael Torres, who's president of a tenant association, is not amused. "I've seen too many cemeteries, too many hospitals, too many funeral parlors," Torres said.

Kevin Wadalavage of Outreach Project, which treats substance abusers, said he is "dumbfounded."

Wallet stolen in 1982 found in NYC tree; $20 gone

NEW YORK – Money doesn't grow on trees, but a tree-care supervisor in New York City's Central Park found an old wallet inside a dead one.

The blue leather wallet had been stolen by a pickpocket 27 years ago. It was found in the hollow of a dying cherry tree. It was near where Ruth Bendik had hers swiped while she watched the New York City Marathon in 1982.

The 69-year-old Upper East Side resident says the only thing missing was $20 in cash. Her credit cards were still there. So were her student ID from Columbia University Teachers College and an employee ID from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

The park worker says he found the wallet last week under five feet of compost. Police tracked down Bendik the next day.

Odd Animal News:NYC eatery grants freedom to lobster centenarian

NEW YORK – A 140-year-old lobster once destined for a dinner plate received the gift of life Friday from a Park Avenue seafood restaurant.

George, the 20-pound supercentenarian crustacean, was freed by City Crab and Seafood in New York City.

"We applaud the folks at City Crab and Seafood for their compassionate decision to allow this noble old-timer to live out his days in freedom and peace," said Ingrid E. Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

PETA spokesman Michael McGraw said the group asked City Crab to return George to the Atlantic Ocean after a diner saw him at the restaurant, where steamed Maine lobster sells for $27 per pound. George had been caught off Newfoundland, Canada and lived in the tank for about 10 days before his release.

Some scientists estimate lobsters can live to be more than 100 years old. PETA and the restaurant guessed George's age at about 140, using a rule of thumb based on the creature's weight.

He was to be released Saturday near Kennebunkport, Maine, in an area where lobster trapping is forbidden.

NYC health dept hopes gruesome pictures on matchbooks get people to think twice about smoking

Before New Yorkers light up, the city health department wants them to have a look at the ravaged lungs, rotting gums and large tumors smoking can cause.

Graphic images of such health problems are printed on a new line of matchbooks issued by the health department. Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden says they're designed to get New Yorkers to think twice about smoking.

The matchbook images are coupled with the words "Cigarettes Are Eating You Alive." The matchbooks are available free at 132 cigarette retailers around the city.

Assistant Commissioner Sarah Perl says the effort is a counterpoint to the billions of dollars the tobacco industry spends promoting smoking with images of healthy, beautiful people.

Odd News:Tow Trucks Parade Through NYC In World Record Bid
A World Record Haul: Nearly 300 Tow Trucks Parade Through NYC In Attempt For Guinness Fame
Nearly 300 tow trucks rumbled through New York City on Saturday in an attempt to smash the world record for the largest parade of its kind.

Organizers think they hit the mark, with 292 trucks participating. The procession included flatbeds, wreckers and 50-ton rotators.

The trucks departed from Shea Stadium in Queens and cruised down a couple of highways before finishing at an abandoned airport tarmac to spell out "New York."

The previous world record was a parade of 83 tow trucks in August 2004 in Washington state.
