Vt. police arrest man driving backward on highway

BERLIN, Vt. – Vermont State Police charged a New Jersey man with drunken driving after receiving a call about a car being driven backward on Interstate 89. Police said they received a report late Friday night of a motorist driving erratically — and at one point driving in reverse — in the southbound lanes in Berlin, south of Montpelier.

When police caught up, they arrested a 46-year-old man. Police said a preliminary breath test indicated the man's blood alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit.

Vt. taxi service allows patrons to decide fares

ESSEX, Vt. – When Eric Hagen started Recession Ride Taxi in Essex, Vt., he took more questions than fares.

Everyone wanted to know if the sign reading "Pay What You Want!" on the back of his taxi was for real. It is, and Hagen says he hasn't been shortchanged yet.

He offers pay-what-you-can bottles of water, Gatorade and soda and a free ride after six paid fares. He tells the Burlington Free Press that business has been good.

Most of his transactions are in cash. But he's also gotten a CD from a musician and a $10 supermarket card.

Hagen has been offering his taxi service Thursday through Sunday nights since June. When he's not a taxi driver, the 46-year-old Hagen works full time for the American Red Cross.

Truck carrying 40K pounds of beer overturns in Vt.

SWANTON, Vt. – Police say a truck carrying 40,000 pounds of beer overturned in Vermont and closed a highway for several hours.

The truck went off the road Monday morning on Route 78 in Swanton. It rolled over and landed in a swamp on a wildlife refuge. The crash also knocked down some power lines.

Travis Greeno, assistant chief of the Swanton Fire Department, says the truck had to be offloaded before it was pulled out of the ditch. He said it was "going to be a long day."

The highway was closed for several hours.

The truck driver was not hurt. It is unclear why he went off the road.

No beer spilled into the swamp.
