Farmer carves out Calif. record with huge pumpkin

ELK GROVE, Calif. - That's a lot of pumpkin seeds. A Canadian farmer has won a contest in California with a pumpkin that weighs more than 1,500 pounds.

Jake van Kooten of British Columbia collected more than $9,000 in prize money Saturday at the Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin and Harvest Festival.

Festival spokesman Steve Capps says the entry set a new California record — by just 1 pound.

Stupid News - Ill. man seeks to reclaim continuous exercise record

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Until last summer, 50-year-old George Hood of Aurora held the world record for continuous exercise by a human being — 111 hours, 11 minutes and 11 seconds on a stationary bicycle.
Then his record was broken by another cyclist from Tasmania.

Now Hood wants to be the record-holder again by cycling on a spin bike for more than 132 hours straight, and raising $50,000 for the YMCA's Spin for Kids event.

The retired Drug Enforcement Agency investigator began his attempt Sunday night at the Fry Family YMCA in Naperville. He is projected to finish on the morning of May 11.
